For our community: A special gift to Community Children’s Center

Posted Monday May 15, 2023
Colette and Ron Gaches follow a philosophy of philanthropy closely aligned with the mission of DCCF: “to help make Lawrence a better place to live, work, and raise a family.” With a $50,000 gift to the Community Children’s Center (CCC) capital campaign, Ron and Colette are starting upstream to address a daunting crisis in our community — the lack of affordable, available child care.  ...

You can create positive change into the future: Spotlight on Chris Barteldes Legacy Seed Fund

Posted Thursday November 17, 2022
Chris Barteldes loved this community. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1964 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree from the University of Kansas. He taught Spanish for 14 years and later became a real estate broker. But this is only a small piece of the impact that he has made for so many in our community.  ...

In 2021, Sally Hare-Schriner and Dan Schriner were approached by Bert Nash staff with a unique collaborative project — transforming the space on the east side of the Community Health Facility through a partnership with Van Go apprentice artists. Plans included a mural, garden space, and a new opportunity for the entire community to have an outdoor space for relaxation and reflection. Sally and Dan enjoy being asked for support for many projects throughout the community, ...

Dale Willey’s legacy gift: commitment to community

Posted Thursday March 11, 2021
Our community lost a legend when Dale Willey passed away in August 2020. Dale’s wife, Jan, and their children came to DCCF in November with a very special legacy gift that will support nonprofit organization projects in Douglas County through the Community Grants program. We asked their daughters Carol Willey Ryan and Suzanne Willey to tell us more about their dad and his commitment to our community. ...

Spotlight: Jacobs Family Fund

Posted Thursday March 11, 2021
What appealed to you most about opening a fund at DCCF? We have always heard how lucky Lawrence is to have a community foundation, but did not know a great deal about it. The more we learned, the more we realized this was something we could do as a family. We have started a partnership with our grandchildren to teach them how to invest, and each child must specify a nonprofit where a monetary donation is made at the end of each year. It has been surprising to us that some of ...

Generosity in action: Donor-advised fund grants

“The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence has served our community for nearly 50 years. For decades they’ve shaped countless young lives and thousands of our neighbors have been impacted by their amazing work! So when we learned about their ‘Great Futures’ undertaking, and understood how significant the improvements were going to be, it was clear we wanted to be involved. We saw a successful track record already established, glaring needs to serve ...

Generosity in action: Donor-advised fund grants

Posted Monday June 1, 2020
“I donated to ‘Dave’s Dream’ to fund a full-time instructor for Mental Health First Aid at Bert Nash, because I wanted to honor David Johnson and all he did for Bert Nash and our community, and because I think the course is important for all of us. Most of us have been faced with helping someone through a mental health crisis, and this course gives critical understanding in discerning the seriousness of the situation and practical guidance in truly ...

#BeMoreLikeClaire

Posted Monday June 1, 2020
“Our mission is to carry on my daughter Claire’s legacy of love and service. She was a Navy dentist, and before she was murdered in January of 2018, she was ready to start a master’s degree program in public health at Johns Hopkins with the goal of increasing access to health care for all. For our first grant, we bought a new van for the Douglas County Dental Clinic so they can provide dental services to more school children. It was a perfect fit.” ...
