The Coal Creek Library in Vinland was built in 1900 to house the books amassed by the Coal Creek Library Association since its founding in 1859. Many of the association’s founders were Abolitionists who settled in southern Douglas County during the “Free State” controversies about Kansas statehood. The library today offers a unique glimpse into the social and cultural lives of rural residents in the past 160 years and is an important historical and cultural asset.
The association has been awarded a Heritage Trust Fund grant from the Kansas Historical Society to address serious structural issues in the National Register of Historic Places library building. This $90,000 grant requires matching funds of $22,500; additional contributions will build an endowment to guarantee long-term sustainability of the library and collections.
