Municipal Stadium at Hobbs Park Legacy Project is a community-based effort to preserve Municipal Stadium at Hobbs Park in historic East Lawrence. Since 1867, baseball has had an immense impact on the Lawrence community. The fields Lawrencians play on, including Municipal Stadium, offer the opportunity to create community through recreational practices. The stadium, constructed in 1947, hosted Negro League teams like the Kansas City Monarchs and was the home field for decades for various youth teams, including the American Legion. Currently, Hobbs Park has been the home for almost two decades to the Kaw Valley Kickball League. Funds raised will be used for a National Register of Historic Places nomination form, as well as potential upgrades to the grandstand and field. This public/private project, in partnership with the City of Lawrence Parks, Recreation, and Culture department and the East Lawrence Neighborhood Association, is an important example of historical preservation in our community.
