The Santa Fe Trail Historical Society of Douglas County (SFTHS) was created in 1967 as a tax-exempt organization to promote, protect, and preserve the history of Southern Douglas County, primarily the Baldwin and Vinland areas but including all the townships of Palmyra, Willow Springs, and Marion. The organization owns and/or manages the following structures: Baldwin Santa Fe Depot, Vinland Grange Hall, Palmyra Well, Clearfield Schoolhouse, Black Jack Cabin, Signal Oak and artifacts associated with them. SFTHS also places and maintains a series of markers at historic sites in the area. We are officially the Douglas County Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association (SFTA). The endowment provides on-going income to protect, promote and maintain these historic sites, oversee collections of archives and artifacts, and educate the public about the area’s history.
