Lawrence Parents as Teachers, Group Connection Opportunities

"Andy, age 7 months, and his mother attended a full session of 4 Sing and Sign classes.

Andy's mother shared that the strategies she learned in the class helped reduce her frustration when Andy cried but could not tell her what he wanted or needed. The simple use of a sign to say "more" when eating, and later at other times, helped her feel like she knew what to do to meet some of his needs. In addition, the use of simple signs, paired with oral language helped her feel more confident about the interactions she had with Andy during daily care routines and during play time. The teacher of the class provided her with an excellent model for how to interact with a very young child. And she enjoyed the time she was able to participate alongside other parents who were experiencing some of the same challenges and celebrations she has had with Andy. She felt less alone and has made some friends through the classes."
