Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas – Lawrence COVID-19 Response

Posted Tuesday July 14, 2020

Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas received a $5,000 Crisis Response Fund grant from DCCF for disaster relief programming.  We received good news about all they were able to do to help Douglas County citizens.

From the Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas grant report:

"Safety Protocols
Everyone’s health and safety was our first priority as we adapted the way we provide services in response to COVID-19. Catholic Charities like many other agencies immediately implemented measures to protect the health of staff, volunteers and the families we serve, especially vulnerable seniors. Additionally, an awning was put up outside the food pantry to maintain social distancing. All staff and volunteers now wear masks and gloves and regularly use hand sanitizer and wipe down surfaces to limit potential exposure.

Food Pantry
Thanks to the generous Lawrence community stepping up to increase food donations the Catholic Charities food pantry in Lawrence has been able to continue providing healthy fresh produce and nonperishable food to families.
The first month was the most challenging for many families. Seniors were unable to access the most needed food resources. Food was prepackaged and distributed from outside to limit contact. Seniors were still not able to come and get their food from the pantry, so our community of relentless volunteers stepped in to distribute the commodities boxes to seniors and prepared prepackaged food bags for families.

Financial Assistance
Job losses and reduced income due to COVID-19 created uncertainty and financial hardship for many local families. Catholic Charities in Lawrence worked with landlords to maintain housing for families by advocating for waving of late fees and assisting with rent and utility payments."
